Dormant Sprays
If you have roses, fruit trees, or other deciduous plants you should be thinking about applying a dormant spray to these plants starting around Thanksgiving. Powdery mildew, rust, scab and other diseases never go away completely in the fall and winter. They go hiding in the cracks and crevices of the bark and branches, lying dormant until spring, when the warm weather causes the diseases become active again. The same holds true with many insect pests. The insect become dormant in the recesses of the tree and shrub bark waiting until spring to reemerge and begin the cycle again.

We had a good turnout for our 3rd annual scarecrow contest. All of the scarecrows were imaginative and fun but only three could win. In first place Kerri Schnetz and her scarecrow, “Pretending to be a Scarecrow" collected the $250 gift card prize. Second place and a $100 gift card was won by Betsy Afdenkamp and her scarecrow “Tin”, and in third for a $50 dollar gift card was Scott Alberts and his scarecrow “Surfing on the Divide”. Be sure to enjoy the fun next year when we have our 4th annual scarecrow contest

Q: I have a double weeping cherry tree (Prunus subhirtella) that has recently been used as the neighborhood cat's scratching post. The tree is in full sun and its trunk is about 1.5" at its lowest (and widest) point. Is there anything I can do to fix the damage?
Also, is it a good idea to put chicken wire up around the tree, maybe about 1' away from it to deter the cats from coming back? I just wrapped the bottom 4' loosely with aluminum foil, with some pure serrano chili pepper paste to keep them away for now.

Q: Does anyone know about high levels of Boron in water killing plants? We drilled a new well about 3 years ago. It came in with naturally soft water. Sounded good to us although we worried about the alkalinity on the plants. We have since been blaming anything and everything for our lack of success in landscaping the yard. We had an arborist friend here and they suggested we test for Boron. Sure enough, way high levels! What now?
