in the Foothills
February
is a transitional month in the California Foothills. Even
though cold weather will return, with morning frost, lots
of stuff can be done in the garden. Bare root fruit trees
and shrubs are still available. Apples, pears, cherries,
peaches, nectarines, pluots, plums, and almonds ready for
planting. Don’t forget blueberries, horseradish, rhubarb,
asparagus, and strawberries. They should all be planted
now! We have ornamental shade trees available bare root
at great savings. Himalayan birch, red maples, native red
bud, European white birch, wisteria, and Harry Lauders walking
stick are all available bare root, right now. There is still
time to spray your fruit trees with dormant spray to prevent
disease and insects in spring. Mix Lily-Miller Poly-Sul
to kill disease with spray oil to kill insects. You must
spray before the plants flower in the spring...
